Unfortunately it "works" well enough for to make it worthwhile for the spammer. If the spammer is using automated tools it doesnt need to work very well at all in order to be worthwhile.

Nicely put. It drives me crazy when people associate SEO with those who use bots to spam everything and anything they think might give them a ranking boost. I'm all for constructive posting that is content relevant, but what you've illustrated here clearly does not qualify.

Regarding marketing to SU...come on, people! This is for pure start-ups that need a bit of traction. Can you really build a customer base from SU users? I think not.

The problem is that it hurts the people who actually put out good content. With these spammers cheating the system; it creates an unfair rankings. I have never spammed any of my content and I have still gotten some good reviews/traffic.

Well spotted. How did Israel and the Nanny appear among all those penguins? Had they already done genuine reviews and the penguins just followed?

I hate spam. And I enjoy stumbleupon because you get to see some interesting articles. But, those penguins could spoil things for everyone.

Tyfus, you are correct, SU users are not ment to me marketed to. Myself, and Im sure many others, are not trying to convince someone to start like SEO, or blogging. (Although I am sure there are those who are). I am simply trying to gain the interest of those already interested in my subject matters. There are people on stumbleupon who are looking to learn more about internet marketing, and campaign management. Those are the only people I want aware of my site.

Secondly, there are many bloggers on stumbleupon that I want to network with, become friends with, share ideas, test theories and many other things related to marketing. I understand that out of 4 million SU members maybe only 10,000, or 1,000, or maybe its only 100 people are interested in what I have to say. Its those people who I want to introduce myself with, and become friends with, and I have already made many of those friends.

While I see the difference between you (by which I mean: the SEO-crowd) and these [expletives (many) deleted], I would still like to urge you to keep evaluating your influence on a site like SU. The complaints people have about SEO are real, and just because there are people doing worse things than you does not mean you're not doing anything wrong. SEO/SEM folks have to realize that Stumblers are not just there to be marketed to.
