<description>Robdogg, just wanted to state for the record I thought you did a nice job on your article overall.

And you are right, webchat, about how to get on the Top Stumblers page. Unless you spend a LOT of time scouring for new content, you will just have to hope someone with a good fan base will thumb it and pass it along and best case: to review it. That's the fastest way for any of your discovered pages to get you to the top stumblers list. Despite my visibility at SU, I've never made the list myself. I seldom have time to use the stumble button or ferret out new info anymore, yet I have a lot of power to help others who have discovered pages, in that I can get those pages exposed to a large audience who then thumb and review in a cascading effect. So that's pretty much my thing. Ironically, according to SU's "algorithm," I'll never be a "Top Stumbler" even though I can help make others into one. Ironic, but the good thing is everyone is so busy hounding the Top Stumblers to review their stuff and whatever, they leave me a bit more alone, which is a good thing.

Another long-term heavyweight at SU is Lerryn, who has never been on the Top Stumblers list either, yet she has a top-ten blog (or close to it) and spends a LOT of her time in the help forums trying to help new stumblers figure out the system. So there are people on SU who contribute a lot to the place who will never show up on the Top Stumblers list. Also, if you have any kind of adult rating, you are automatically excluded from Top Stumbler status. I only recently got my blog's R-rating removed (finally) since it was more of a PG-13 than an R, but more mature than a G. I suggested a PG-type rating but it fell on deaf ears.

I think Robdogg is doing a much better job of trying to present accurate information as best as he can to his readers, unlike some marketing-oriented blogs I have come across. Let's just say the comments I had for a few of THOSE weren't as polite as befitting a "refined southern woman." LOL.

So enjoy, I'm off to go plow through some of my mail pile before bed. I do wish we could have folders to sort our incoming mail into. But that's a whole other issue. Heh.

Cheers, all!

<description>I have a theory about the Top Stumblers. I found myself to be one during much of January and was hard put to explain it until I looked at a few sites I had stumbled and found that some of them had been thumbed up agaan and again. I think now that if you find a great stumble or two that gets shed loads of thumbs ups then you might become a Top Stumbler for a while. But to stay there you probably have to keep on doing this.

		<description>caile,

Thanks for responses, I hope your response will also add to others learning process on how to use SU to its fullest. Here are some of my adds on your comments as well.

1) I am not recommending the request of friendship, I am simply reporting that requesting friendship amoung newbies works for those types of people. I have also already learned that a request for friendship amoung pro stumblers does not work and is basically frowned upon. Basicall you have to earn it.

2) I understand this as well, I will be adding an article on how to properly review pages and how to properly tag pages

3 and 4) This is also understand, and is only used as a reference. You are correct with the stumblerank.com site if you want to find pro stumblers based on a specific criteria such as amount of fans, stumbles or reviews.

4) It is well noted that SU top stumblers is not the best reference.

My advice is not to use SU as a self promotion tactic. My advice is to use SU the way it was designed and traffic to your own blog will naturally follow. My attempts here are to educate others on how to network with others and how to use SU the right way.

Thanks</description>

<description>PS: Please pardon my typos and any redundancies in my previous comment. I forgot to proofread my own writing, and I'm an editor. Pretty shameful on my part, lol. But there is no way to go back and correct them, so this is my disclaimer to apologize for my poor writing. :-P~~

Cheers again,

		<description>Just a note:
1) Requesting friendship, except among brand newbies who don't know any better, is generally frowned upon by more veteran stumblers and won't get you as far as you think.
2) Make sure when you do review pages, in order not to get a bad reputation, that you CORRECTLY tag any pages you review.
3) The "Top Stumblers" page is widely known as being rather arbitrary and is a completely mystery to those of us who have been there a long time, yet if you take time to really look at some of the "featured" stumblers (especially near the bottom of the list), you'll find that some of them have few friends, few stumbled pages, and few reviews. So frankly, most of the SU community is stumped as to how this "Top Stumbler" page is even configured since it makes no sense in a number of cases.
4) Lastly, a better reference (and one that is not manipulated by SU itself) is http://stumblerank.com which lists the top 100 stumblers in descending order in five separate categories. (At the time of this comment, it is currently having server trouble so it's completely in disarray, but when it's resolved, it will show much more information statistics-wise than SU's "Top Stumbler" page.)
5) Lastly, make sure your own SU pages are interesting, or no amount of "friend-scouting" is really going to net you much of anything except others who have equally uninteresting pages and are desperate for friends also. I gave one newcomer who asked, some advice on how to present content (in whatever interest category she had, which was marketing, not really my big thing despite my own marketing/journalism degree) but she listened to my advice, and within less than two months landed on the Top Stumblers list. Not that she's surpassed many of the more long-term stumblers in any way, but she at least got noticed. There are plenty of other articles about SU that state that the SU version of the Top Stumblers list is not what it's hyped up to be.

My best advice: Build it, and they will come. And beware of open self-promotional tactics. That will be very counter-productive to your aspirations on SU.

I plan to start writing my own articles on a non-SU blog myself, since I get so many mails on SU asking for advice that I may as well (hopefully it will cut down my mail pile). *Grin*

The problem is that so many relatively green SU members are writing all these SU advice articles, and more often than not, the advice is bad and counterproductive, because they haven't been there long enough to see the backlash that occurs due to some of their own suggestions.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
caile~
